This is me, who are you?

A Journey of Resilience, Reinvention, and Empathy

Hi there! My name is Sue, and I’m in my late 50s. I’m a mother, a counsellor, and—like many of you—someone who has faced her fair share of life’s curveballs.

For most of my life, I was a single mum to six wonderful children. Life wasn’t easy; my days were filled with endless to-do lists, late-night worries, and jobs that, while necessary to keep food on the table, didn’t feed my soul. But amidst the chaos, one thing became crystal clear: my passion lay with people—especially those who had struggled with life’s challenges, just like I had.

Retraining in My 40s: A Leap of Faith

In my 40s, with my kids growing older, I decided it was time to follow a dream I’d quietly carried for years. I wanted to become a counsellor—a profession where I could help others navigate the storms of life.

But let me tell you, that decision didn’t come without fear. I worried constantly about what others would think. Was I too old? Was it too late? Was I foolish for even trying?

Those fears almost stopped me in my tracks. But deep down, I knew this was something I had to do—not just for myself, but to show my children (and myself) that it’s never too late to chase a dream.

The Power of Small Steps

I didn’t dive in headfirst; I took small, deliberate steps. Each course I completed, each assignment I turned in, and each moment of doubt I overcame brought me closer to my authentic self.

When I finally qualified as a counsellor, it wasn’t just a professional milestone. It was the moment I realized I’d proven something to myself: I was capable, strong, and worthy of living a life aligned with my true purpose.

The Journey Doesn’t End Here

Has the learning stopped? Absolutely not. Every day, I learn something new—about my work, about the people I have the privilege to help, and about myself. I’ve discovered strength I never knew I had and an unshakable belief in the power of reinvention.

Now, I want to share that journey with others—people like you who may be wondering if it’s too late to follow a dream or make a change. Spoiler alert: it’s not.

Questions for You

As you’re reading this, I invite you to take a moment for yourself. Ask:

  • Am I happy with my job?

  • Am I just existing, or am I truly living?

  • What will be my legacy?

  • Who am I if I strip away the expectations, the roles, and the external influences?

These aren’t easy questions, but they’re worth asking. Because your journey—your authentic self—is waiting for you, just as mine was waiting for me.
