Welcome to Sue Blackshaw Counselling – A Safe Space to Heal, Grow, and Reclaim Your Life

Are you feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or emotionally exhausted? Do you find yourself stuck in the same patterns—wanting change, but unsure where to start?

You’re not alone, and you don’t have to face it alone either.

At Sue Blackshaw Counselling, we understand that life doesn’t come with a manual—and sometimes, even the strongest among us need help navigating its challenges. Whether you're dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship issues, or a life transition, our work together will focus on what matters most: you—your story, your goals, and your path to feeling whole again.

I’m Sue, a qualified and registered therapist with over six years of experience helping people untangle emotional pain, build resilience, and reconnect with a sense of purpose. Clients often tell me they feel safe and truly heard for the first time—and that’s not by accident. I offer a warm, confidential, and non-judgmental space where you can be your authentic self, without pressure or expectation.

No two journeys are the same. That’s why my approach is always tailored to your unique needs. We go at your pace, exploring the root of your struggles and developing tools that genuinely work for you. Whether you prefer traditional talk therapy, trauma-informed work, or integrative techniques, I’m here to support your healing in the way that feels right for you.

This is more than therapy—it’s your opportunity to break free from survival mode and start living with intention, clarity, and joy.

I also offer flexible therapy options and group support spaces to suit different preferences and schedules. If you’re ready to take the first step—or even if you’re just curious about what’s possible—I invite you to get in touch.

Let’s discover what healing looks like for you.

Your Safe Space, Wherever You Are - In person, online or telephone

At Sue Blackshaw Counselling, we know that feeling comfortable in your environment is just as important as the counselling itself. That’s why we offer welcoming, private therapy rooms in Burnley and Rochdale—giving you the flexibility to choose a location that feels right for you.

But we also understand that life doesn’t always make it easy to attend sessions in person. Whether you're managing a busy schedule, mobility issues, or simply prefer the comfort of your own space, we offer online and telephone counselling to make support accessible—wherever you are.

Our goal is simple: to provide compassionate, professional therapy that fits your life. Whether in person or remote, every session is tailored to your unique needs and designed to offer a calm, non-judgmental space where you can explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace.

If you’re looking for support that meets you where you are—physically and emotionally—we’re here to help.

Get in touch today to ask a question or book your first session. You don’t have to go through this alone.

Clinical Supervision

Clinical supervision in counselling is a structured, collaborative process that supports and enhances the professional growth of counsellors and therapists. Through regular sessions with an experienced supervisor, practitioners can reflect on their work, gain insights into challenging cases, and ensure they are providing ethical and effective care. Supervision fosters personal development, builds clinical skills, and helps manage the emotional demands of therapeutic practice. Whether you're an experienced counsellor or just starting your career, clinical supervision is an essential component of maintaining best practices and promoting client wellbeing.

Brainspotting in the therapy room

Brainspotting is an alternative therapy which uses spots in an individual’s visual field in order to support the processing of trauma trapped within the subcortical brain, the area of the brain responsible for motion, consciousness, emotions and learning.

Brainspotting therapy is an innovative and highly effective therapeutic approach focusing on connections between mind and body.

The specialised form of psychotherapy is formulated to help individuals in accessing and processing deep rooted emotions, memories or traumas. Based on the premise that ‘where you look affects how you feel’ finding eye positions which correlate with unconscious, emotional experiences.

Dog Therapy for Mental Wellbeing

Research has shown that incorporating dogs into therapy can yield notable improvements in mental wellness by offering emotional support. Therapy dogs are purposefully trained to provide a gentle and comforting presence for individuals grappling with distress or emotional challenges. These remarkable animals are carefully selected and trained for their patience, and they offer unreserved acceptance and affection, often sitting on laps to provide additional emotional support, particularly for issues like anxiety.
The versatility of therapy dogs enables them to access a wide array of settings, including hospices, retirement/nursing homes, schools, and hospitals, where their presence can contribute significantly to the emotional well-being of those they encounter.

Group work

At Sue Blackshaw Counselling, we understand the value of group work in exploring and addressing mental wellbeing. Our group sessions provide a platform for individuals to connect with others who may be experiencing similar emotions and challenges. Participants can gain insights and coping strategies while feeling supported by the group dynamic.
The group sessions focusing on anxiety, anger, and grief are designed to foster a safe and inclusive environment where participants can share their experiences and learn from one another. These sessions provide an opportunity to explore common themes, develop a deeper understanding of personal emotions, and cultivate effective coping mechanisms.
By engaging in group work, individuals can not only gain valuable knowledge about mental wellbeing but also find comfort in knowing that they are not alone in their struggles. The shared experiences and interactions with like-minded individuals can promote a sense of community and offer new perspectives on managing anxiety, anger, and grief.
If you are interested in participating in group sessions to further your understanding of mental wellbeing and connect with others on a similar journey, we welcome you to reach out to Sue Blackshaw Counselling for more information.

Client Feedback:

I could feel more different in the space of a few short weeks, than I have done with the effort professionalism and care of my counsellor, Sue. She put me at ease so quickly that I was able to lower my guard almost immediately, this meant I got the absolute best out of my sessions. I never once felt pitied but instead always listened to and made to feel like a valuable human being. Sue picked out details that I typically hide from most but she saw me. She is a credit to her profession.

Client Feedback:

My counsellor was very receptive, provided me with strategies that I could identify with and were relevant to me. I feel like I have had an excellent set of sessions which have benefitted me immensely.
